Bharat Vann Green Initiative
Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitaraman, launched Bharat Vann Green Initiative (Bharat refers to India and Vann means Forest) on 17th September 2026. The inauguration programme took place at Lodhi Colony Park in central Delhi. The launch date coincided with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 76th Birthday. New Delhi Municipal Council is the collaborating partner in this initiative.
The aim of this initiative is to increase the green cover in the national capital and restore urban ecology. Using indigenous plants suitable for the area around 10000 saplings were planted wihin an acre of land. This method is called Miyawaki where large number of primarily indigenous saplings are planted within a limited surface area. This facilities in the growth of the forest faster compared to traditional forest cover. The trees grow in length as they compete with one another for sunlight.
People in Delhi could use the expanded green space for walking, meditation and yoga. School children were encouraged to participate in this programme through tree plantation drive. India Infrastructure Finance Company Limited is funding the project through Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. Enviro Creators Foundation is the implementation agency that will manage the maintenance of the saplings for 36 months.
Delhi ranks among the top 10 cities reeling under extreme air pollution. This kind of government initiative addresses the existing challenge. What is even more praiseworthy is the involvement of the common people where they find a sense of belonging to the trees and the green cover. The socio-emotional attachment creates awareness among the participants which often has a ripple effect in terms of knowledge exchange and sharing. Involvement of high-profile political figures legitimizes the initiative that builds public trust.
